Essential Skills Challenge The 2014 Skills Canada National Competition will highlight the importance of essential skills within the skilled trade and technology occupations. Essential Skills are the skills that people need for work, learning, life and remembering concepts introduced in technical training. They provide the foundation for learning all other skills.
There are nine key essential skills for the workplace: Numeracy, Oral Communication, Working with Others, Continuous Learning, Reading Text, Writing, Thinking, Document Use, and Digital. These skills are used in nearly every job and at different levels of complexity. They enable people to evolve with their jobs and adapt to workplace change.
An Essential Skills Challenge will be one of the exciting areas at the two-day Competition. Students and guests will immerse themselves in hands-on challenges through various Try-a-Trade® and Technology activities that will heighten their awareness of the nine essential skills.
