Ottawa, Ontario, April 3, 2025<\/strong> \u2013 Skills\/Comp\u00e9tences Canada (SCC), a national not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting skilled trades and technologies as rewarding career paths for youth, is proud to announce that WorkSafe Saskatchewan, the partnership between the Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety and the Saskatchewan Workers\u2019 Compensation Board (WCB), has signed as premier sponsor for the Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC) 2025, taking place in Regina. This event will take place at the Regina Exhibition Association Limited (REAL) District in Saskatchewan on May 29 and 30. WorkSafe Saskatchewan\u2019s support will allow SCC to increase awareness of the great careers that are available in the skilled trades and technologies to youth in Canada.<\/p>\n

\u201cSCC is grateful for the support given by WorkSafe Saskatchewan, as this will help us toward our mission of promoting skilled careers to our future workforce. By being involved in the SCNC, employers can connect with Canadian youth and educate them about the career opportunities available in the skilled trade and technology industries,\u201d said Shaun Thorson, SCC CEO.<\/p>\n

More than 500 of Canada’s best in skilled trades and technologies will gather to compete in more than 40 competitions. Labour groups, industry partners, government officials, educators and youth will also be present at the REAL District to support the competitors, and watch and join different activities that will be available. Among them, WorkSafe Saskatchewan will be onsite to support the competitors and host a booth where visiting students and the public can participate in a Try-A-Trade\u00d2<\/sup> and Technology activity. WorkSafe Saskatchewan will also present competitors with medals at the SCNC\u2019s Closing Ceremony.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn behalf of WorkSafe Saskatchewan, we are pleased to sponsor the Skills Canada National Competition 2025, in Saskatchewan\u2019s capital city of Regina,\u201d said WCB CEO Phillip Germain. \u201cEncouraging young workers in the skilled trades is so important for Canada and the future growth of our country. As an organization, we are committed to seeing these young workers prosper in these skills and technology industries while remaining safe on the job. All workplace injuries are preventable and even one injury is too many.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2022, the Canadian government estimated that more than 256,000 new apprentices will be needed by 2026 to meet the demand. Many Canadian goods and services rely on skilled tradespeople to be manufactured or delivered, therefore the shortage of skilled workers in Canada will be a hindrance to the country\u2019s economic growth and prosperity. According to the Canadian government, approximately 700,000 skilled trade workers in Canada are expected to retire by 2028.
