Corporal Karla Olivares-Meza shares her incredible journey as an Aviation Systems Technician.<\/em><\/p>\n

My career journey in the skilled trades<\/strong><\/p>\n

I always knew I wanted to work with my hands. In high school, I took an automotive class and later had the opportunity to take part in a cooperative education program at an aircraft maintenance company. That’s when my auto-shop teacher encouraged me to join the cadet program and consider a career in the military. It was a turning point for me, and I started the application process as I was finishing high school.<\/p>\n

Joining the Canadian Armed Forces allowed me to continue my studies without going into debt and gave me a stable career in the field I studied. My training was completely paid for, and within about a year and a half I was posted to the Canadian Forces Base Moose Jaw where I work on engine and airframe components as an Aviation Systems Technician.<\/p>\n

Why I love my job<\/strong><\/p>\n

I love the variety; every day is a little different \u2012 I could be changing a tire one day and installing an engine or replacing a wing the next. I’ve been very fortunate to travel across Canada and the US, enabling me to meet extraordinary people from all walks of life \u2012 encounters I probably wouldn’t have had without the Canadian Armed Forces.<\/p>\n

I’m passionate about encouraging women to believe in their potential and to understand that no obstacle is insurmountable when you pursue your dreams with determination. It all starts with hard work and perseverance.<\/p>\n

Many career opportunities<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Canadian Armed Forces offers an incredible array of careers. Whether on land, at sea or in the air, there’s truly something for everyone. You can work in construction, logistics, engineering, administration, cooking, medicine, computers, scuba diving… and much more. It’s an environment that also opens the door to numerous travel opportunities and rewarding friendships.<\/p>\n

My advice for young people<\/strong><\/p>\n

My advice to young people is to make the most of the free resources available in high school. Listen to your teachers\u2019 experiences, ask all the questions and explore your interests. Above all, don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, and remember it’s never too late to change your mind or your career path. Dare to try new things \u2012 that’s where you often discover your true passions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
