EDMONTON,<\/a>\u00a0May 16, 2012 \/CNW\/ \u2013\u00a0(SKILLS CANADA<\/a>\u00a0NATIONAL COMPETITION 2012) \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Canada\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0best and brightest skilled trade and technology students received official recognition for their outstanding performance as\u00a0Skills\/Comp\u00e9tences Canada<\/a>\u00a0announced the results of the\u00a0Skills Canada National Competition<\/a>. The closing ceremonies, held today inEdmonton,<\/a>\u00a0were highlighted by the parade of champions and the announcement of the Members of\u00a0Team Canada<\/a>, whose next stop will be\u00a0WorldSkills Leipzig 2013<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The essential contribution of skilled trades to the economic and social well being of all Canadians was a common theme throughout the closing ceremonies. Highlights included keynote addresses from Dr.\u00a0Kellie Leitch,<\/a>\u00a0Parliamentary Secretary to the Honorable\u00a0Diane Finley,<\/a>\u00a0Minister of HRSDC, the Honorable,\u00a0Naresh Bhardwaj,<\/a>\u00a0MLA\u00a0Edmonton<\/a>-Ellerslie,\u00a0Ken Pischke,<\/a>\u00a0Senior Vice-President,<\/a>\u00a0Cenovus Energy<\/a>\u00a0(Presenting Sponsor of the 2012 Competition), and\u00a0Mike Holmes,<\/a>\u00a0Official Spokesperson for\u00a0Skills Canada<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Canada\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0Most Trusted Contractor.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur government\u2019s top priority is\u00a0job creation<\/a>\u00a0and economic growth, and we recognize that, as the future workforce, young Canadians have much to contribute to our country\u2019s long-term prosperity,\u201d said Dr.\u00a0Kellie Leitch,<\/a>\u00a0Parliamentary Secretary to\u00a0Diane Finley,<\/a>\u00a0Minister of\u00a0Human Resources and Skills Development,<\/a>\u00a0during the closing ceremony. \u201cThrough our grants,\u00a0tax credits<\/a>and support for training programs and skills competitions, we are encouraging apprenticeships and careers in the skilled trades.\u201d<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Skills Canada<\/a>\u00a0National Competition is the only national, Olympic-style, multi-trade and technology event of its kind for young students and apprentices in the country. The event took place May 14-15th<\/sup>\u00a0at the\u00a0Edmonton<\/a>\u00a0EXPO Centre in\u00a0Edmonton City,<\/a>\u00a0Alberta<\/a>\u00a0where forty different assigned projects were showcased in major skilled trade and technology categories. Competitors were evaluated by independent judges from the respective industry sectors, who based their decisions on industry standards and established work practices, including such criteria as quality of work, safety, cleanliness, skill level and creativity.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe goal of this annual Competition is to reward students for excellence in the skilled trades, while directly involving industry leaders and educators in the training process and in evaluating their performance in a way that is relevant to employers\u2019 needs,\u201d said Shaun Thorson, CEO, Skills Canada. \u201cThe enthusiasm and hard work shown by the competitors throughout the Competition has been inspiring and we want to congratulate each one. We also want to thank and acknowledge the ongoing support from the Government of Canada, sponsors and organizers for working with us to ensure that there is a bright future for Canada\u2019s skilled trade and technology workforce.\u201d<\/p>\n

Medalis<\/strong>ts<\/strong>\u00a0A total of 180 medals were awarded to the top champions in six skilled trade and technology categories: transportation, construction, manufacturing, information and technology, service and employment. Team Canada for W<\/strong>orldSkills Leipzig 2013<\/strong>\u00a0The 35 members of Team Canada heading to WorldSkills Leipzig 2013 will compete in 33 skill categories against more than 900 Competitors from 51 Member countries\/regions.
