{"id":2180,"date":"2016-10-19T11:26:36","date_gmt":"2016-10-19T15:26:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/skillsdev.ifpt.org\/?p=2180"},"modified":"2016-10-19T11:25:25","modified_gmt":"2016-10-19T15:25:25","slug":"mike-holmes-jr-chef-korecki-rise-challenge-national-skilled-trades-technology-launch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.skillscompetencescanada.com\/en\/mike-holmes-jr-chef-korecki-rise-challenge-national-skilled-trades-technology-launch\/","title":{"rendered":"Mike Holmes Jr. &#038; Chef Korecki rise to the challenge at National Skilled Trades &#038; Technology Launch"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"content\">\n<h3><b><i>Tenth National Skilled Trades and Technology Week Kicks Off with Try-A-Trade\u00ae and Technology Activities<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"ReleaseContent\" class=\"content\">\n<p><strong><span class=\"xn-location\">OTTAWA<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-chron\">Nov. 5, 2014<\/span> \/CNW\/ \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Yesterday Skills\/Comp\u00e9tences <span class=\"xn-location\">Canada<\/span> (SCC) was proud to launch its tenth National Skilled Trades and Technology Week creating awareness for students and educators of the incredible career opportunities available in skilled trades and technologies across <span class=\"xn-location\">Canada<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>At the launch event, at <span class=\"xn-org\">Algonquin College<\/span>, 300 students from <span class=\"xn-location\">Ottawa<\/span> participated in hands-on Try-a-Trade<b>\u00ae<\/b> and Technology activities put on by 11 industry partners and the college. \u00a0Speakers included <span class=\"xn-person\">Mike Holmes Jr.<\/span> of \u201cHolmes Makes it Right\u201d and \u201cMike\u2019s Ultimate Garage\u201d as well as Executive Chef <span class=\"xn-person\">Jonathan Korecki<\/span> from <span class=\"xn-location\">Ottawa\u2019s<\/span> 18 &amp; SideDoor restaurants. \u00a0Chef Korecki set a hospitality challenge for <span class=\"xn-person\">Mike Holmes Jr.<\/span> and Skills\/Comp\u00e9tences <span class=\"xn-location\">Canada\u2019s<\/span>CEO <span class=\"xn-person\">Shaun Thorson<\/span> underlining the importance of formal education on the path to a successful future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is essential for Canadians to understand the vital role of skilled trades and technology in our society and its importance for our economy,\u201d stated Thorson. \u201cSkilled trades and technology careers include electricians, plumbers, chefs, IT professionals, graphic designers, hairdressers, entrepreneurs of every stripe and so much more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s Essential Skill highlights the importance of Numeracy competencies for skilled trades and technologies. Numeracy refers to many forms of math skills fundamental to entering the skilled trades and technology field. Foundational courses, including math, are absolutely critical to guarantee both individual success and <span class=\"xn-location\">Canada\u2019s<\/span>position at the forefront of global competiveness.<\/p>\n<p>The Honourable Jason Kenney, <span class=\"xn-location\">Canada\u2019s<\/span> Jobs Minister, praised the focus of the annual National Skilled Trades and Technology Week. \u201cThere is a paradox of too many Canadians without jobs and too many jobs without workers. To address this, it is critical that we match the skills of Canadians with the needs of employers. A career in the trades or technology not only offers rewarding work opportunities for individuals, it also contributes to <span class=\"xn-location\">Canada\u2019s<\/span> competitive advantage in the global economy. Congratulations to Skills\/Comp\u00e9tences <span class=\"xn-location\">Canada<\/span> for its key role in promoting careers in the trades and for such a successful National Trades and Technology Week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Skilled trades and technologies are becoming ever increasingly vital to <span class=\"xn-location\">Canada\u2019s<\/span> future economic stability and its standing in global markets. The career paths are varied, plentiful and fulfilling.
