I\u2019ve been a big supporter of the skilled trades throughout my career. Together, with my daughter Sherry and son Michael, we advocate for increased diversity on our crews, hire apprentices, and aim to reduce the stigma associated with skilled trades to establish a stronger workforce for the next generation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, there are still persistent myths that need to be exposed.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Myth #1\u00a0–\u00a0The\u00a0skilled\u00a0trades\u00a0is\u00a0just\u00a0a\u00a0job,\u00a0NOT a\u00a0career<\/h3>\n

Definitely not! Technical expertise, hands-on experience, and many hours of training are all required.\u00a0Skills\u00a0such as critical thinking, creativity,\u00a0collaboration,\u00a0problem-solving,\u00a0and\u00a0communication,\u00a0are key and learning\u00a0how\u00a0to use\u00a03D technology, digital\u00a0devices, and diagnostic tools, are\u00a0included in today\u2019s\u00a0skilled trade programs.\u00a0These skills prepare you for a career with opportunities and advancements.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Myth #2\u00a0–\u00a0You\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0have\u00a0to\u00a0be\u00a0very\u00a0smart<\/h3>\n

Granted, not everyone learns in the same way, and many people are visual learners who benefit from hands-on instruction, but skilled-based jobs aren\u2019t\u00a0\u201call brawn and no brain.\u201d\u00a0Did you know how essential mathematics is to an\u00a0electrician, or to\u00a0building an HVAC system, or using a mechanic\u2019s\u00a0sophisticated diagnostic tools?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Myth #3 – Skilled trades means construction worker, plumber and electrician<\/h3>\n

There are\u00a0many\u00a0skilled trade\u00a0careers\u00a0actively promoted\u00a0by Skills\/Comp\u00e9tences\u00a0Canada,\u00a0in sectors\u00a0including\u00a0<\/span>construction<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>employment<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>information technology<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>manufacturing and engineering<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>services<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>transportation<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0Over 400 skilled trades\u00a0are recognized\u00a0across Canada\u00a0including 150 in Ontario.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Myth #4 – These\u00a0jobs\u00a0aren\u2019t\u00a0suited\u00a0for\u00a0women<\/h3>\n

Not true. I’ve worked with many women in the industry as associates and on my crew. We employed two WIST (Women in Skilled Trades) graduates last season, and one of them, Bailey, is now a full-time crew member. There are many excellent job opportunities for women that offer good salaries, benefits, flexibility, and variety. Women need to be made more aware that these opportunities exist and that they have an extensive support network available to assist them.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Myth #5 – You\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0earn\u00a0a\u00a0good\u00a0living<\/h3>\n

This\u00a0is not the case. According to Talent.com, entry-level\u00a0salaries\u00a0\u00a0start around\u00a0$47,755.00 per year, with the highest-paid individuals earning up to $77,774.00\u00a0or more\u00a0per year. General labourers can earn anything from $18.00 to $36.00 per hour, depending on experience, and skilled trade technicians can earn up to $50.00 per hour.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Myth #6 – There are barriers for diverse workers in the industry<\/h3>\n

\u00a0U<\/span>nfortunately, yes. However, we are the only ones who can change this collectively, and the barriers are becoming fewer and fewer. That\u2019s why working with organizations like Skills Canada and its provincial and territorial counterparts is critical since it provides a support team to assist in overcoming these obstacles.<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been an advocate for the skilled trade and technology industries\u00a0for over two decades, and I\u2019ll continue\u00a0to be for as long as I\u2019m able\u00a0to. By working\u00a0together, let\u2019s\u00a0continue to be champions for the skilled trades, helping to create a strong workforce for the next generation, breaking down barriers, and ending the stigma associated with skilled trades.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
