My career journey
My journey into the trades has been anything but predictable. Construction was never a career I envisioned for myself, let alone one I’d build a future in. But when I decided to give it a shot, it completely changed my life. I started at the very bottom—cleaning job sites—never expecting where it would lead. Now, I have the incredible opportunity to co-host our Holmes TV shows alongside my dad and brother. What began as a taking a chance has turned into a career I love. I never set out to be in the trades, but I’m so grateful I found my way here. There’s something deeply rewarding about creating with my own hands, seeing the tangible results of my work, and continuing to learn every single day.
Why I love working in construction
No two days are ever the same, and that’s what I love most about my job. Working in construction keeps me on my toes, always learning, always adapting. I also love the reaction I get when people realize I’m a woman in the industry—it’s a great reminder that we’re breaking barriers every day. This field is constantly evolving, with new products, techniques, and innovations, making every project an exciting challenge. Beyond the work itself, the most rewarding part is knowing I’m making a real difference in people’s lives. My father was my biggest inspiration. I always thought working with my hands and tools would just be a hobby, but he pushed me to see my potential and encouraged me to pursue the trades as a career. To this day, he continues to teach and inspire me, shaping the craftsperson I am today.
Career opportunities in the skilled trades
The skilled trades offer an incredible range of career opportunities! When I first started, I had no idea just how many different paths existed under the trades umbrella. Whether you prefer working behind the scenes in an office or being hands-on at a job site, there’s something for everyone. From woodworking and masonry to architecture, planning, and even production, the options are endless. The skilled trades aren’t just about building—they’re about creativity, problem-solving, and shaping the world around us. No matter your passion, there’s a place for you in the skilled trades!
My favorite skills memory
I’ve been involved with Skills/Compétences Canada (SCC) for a long time, and while I haven’t always been able to attend every event, I truly love joining whenever I can. My dad first started working with SCC in 2006, and my brother and I have proudly continued to support their mission. It’s incredible to share our passion for the skilled trades with our SCC family. One of my favorite parts of the event is always the Try-A-Trade® and Technology activities. It’s so important to spark interest in the younger generation, giving them hands-on exposure to the trades—an opportunity they might not otherwise have. Seeing that excitement firsthand is always a highlight for me. Over the years, I’ve made so many great memories and lifelong friends through SCC. I’m really looking forward to being a part of the Skills Canada National Competition 2025, this month!
