Luca Assad
Biography
I chose Cooking as a career because I love to cook, and I love to eat! I’m constantly looking for new restaurants to visit and new recipes to make at home. Every day in the kitchen is different and as a chef, you’re constantly learning about new ingredients and new techniques. Food fascinates me and I love the strong camaraderie that exists within the chef community. Once I graduate, I plan to travel and work at restaurants. Eventually, I want to open my own restaurant and earn a Michelin star.
I got into Skills competitions through my culinary school, and I was thrilled when I won the gold medal in Cooking at the Skills Canada National Competition 2025. It was surreal when I was named to Team Canada to compete at WorldSkills Shanghai 2026! But throughout all my training, during every tough moment, I knew that if I kept pushing, I would get there. My biggest challenge in Shanghai will be adapting to unexpected obstacles, whether that’s new equipment or unfamiliar ingredients. I’ll adjust quickly but still have lots of fun.
Interesting Fact
An interesting fact about me is that I can embroider quite well. I’m a beginner, but I enjoy it and find it very relaxing.
Skills for Success
Communication has been instrumental in my training process and vital to my success. I’ll use that skill, work hard and give 100 per cent of my efforts to the competition. My goal is to win a medal at WorldSkills Shanghai 2026.
