For Scott Glasgo, the journey into the skilled trades began with a single high school class. What started as an introduction to drafting quickly became a passion that shaped his future career.

“I was first drawn to the trades in high school. I took a drafting class and I was instantly hooked,” Scott recalls. “I moved on to 3D laser cutting and I realized I loved the precision of drawing. And creating something from nothing? It’s a great feeling.”

That passion led Scott into Mechanical Engineering, a field he says offers far more opportunities than many people realize. While some may think of engineering as a single career path, Scott explains that the industry is incredibly diverse, with opportunities to design and build machines, perform repairs, teach the next generation of skilled professionals, or advance into leadership and management roles.

“What people don’t realize is that the skilled trades are expansive,” he says. “There is such opportunity for growth.”

Scott encourages young people to keep an open mind when considering their future. He believes the skilled trades provide a rewarding career that combines creativity, problem-solving, and hands-on work with excellent earning potential.

“I would tell a high school student that the skilled trades are demanding, they pay well, they’re hands-on and fulfilling,” Scott says. “There are so many job opportunities out there, and even the government is offering support for training. It’s important to tell high school students that they could run their own businesses too!”

Scott’s story is a reminder that a single classroom experience can spark a lifelong passion. With countless career paths, opportunities for advancement, and the chance to create something tangible every day, the skilled trades continue to offer exciting futures for the next generation of skilled workforce.
