My passion for hairstyling began with something simple: I love making people feel good about themselves. Hairstyling is a creative career where every day is different, and one of the things I appreciate most is that working in a skilled trade can also give you the opportunity to own your own business. When I first entered the industry, I knew I had found a career that combined creativity with the chance to make a positive impact on people’s lives. Over the years, I’ve also seen how much the hairstyling profession has grown and evolved.
Today, there are more career opportunities than ever before. While many people think hairstylists only work in salons, that’s just one path. You can become a salon owner or even a teacher, helping to train the next generation of professionals. Our industry has also become more sustainable, with innovative products and practices creating exciting new opportunities. If you’re passionate about learning, you can even build a career educating other hairstylists.
As a National Technical Committee (NTC) member in Hairstyling with Skills/Compétences Canada, I have the opportunity to support Competitors as they showcase their talent at the Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC). One of the most rewarding parts of my role is connecting with young people and helping them discover the possibilities that exist in the skilled trades. I love telling high school students that the skilled trades need them. There is a high demand for skilled professionals across Canada. The skilled trades offer rewarding careers that allow you to earn while you learn, develop valuable skills and build a future you’re proud of.
My advice to anyone exploring their career options is to keep an open mind. You never know where a skilled trade might take you. For me, hairstyling has opened doors I never imagined—from working with incredible clients to mentoring future professionals and contributing to SCNC. There are so many opportunities when you learn a trade. It can take you places you never knew were possible.
