My Skills Background

I’m a Software Developer working with Verafin, a company that helps banks and credit unions fight financial crime. I’ve been in this position for about a year, previously working with Memorial University for over 20 years. I’ve been the Expert in my Skill Area since WorldSkills Kazan 2019.

The Importance of Training

When I train a competitor, I stress the importance of practice, practice, practice! I encourage our competitor to study previous test projects for tips on how to prepare for task content and time management. The biggest challenge we’re facing at WorldSkills Lyon 2024 is being prepared for the competition and venue. Until you’re in that overwhelming environment, it’s impossible to understand just how big a deal this is.

Success for me is knowing my competitor feels supported prior to and throughout the competition. I hope they go home feeling they did their best and are excited to share their experience with others.

I look forward to the energy of the competition. I love seeing the competitors perform at their peak and I relish connecting with Experts and participants from other countries. The experience is second to none!

The Value of the Skills for Success

Creativity and Innovation, Problem Solving and Digital are all key skills to use during training and the competition. Reading is also critical so that competitors understand exactly what is required of them.

I hope our competitor appreciates the WorldSkills Competition experience. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be named to WorldSkills Team Canada 2024. They get to travel to a new country with their teammates and, above all, they get to compete with and form friendships with people from all over the world.

Why I Love Volunteering

I love volunteering because I’ve always supported lifelong learning and helping people with technology. Skills/Compétences Canada and WorldSkills exemplify this approach. The skills events are a lot of work, but they enable me to regularly connect with like-minded people and experience some of the most rewarding activities of my life!
