For Cecile Bukmeier, a member of the National Technical Committee (NTC) and WorldSkills Team Canada Expert in Car Painting, a career in the skilled trades has always been about creating something tangible.
“I was drawn to the trades because of the results you get when you finish something,” says Cecile. “I was never interested in a job where I’d sit at a desk all day. In Car Painting, like most trades, there is an immediate impact made when you finish.”
Working in the transportation sector has also shown Cecile just how many career opportunities are available within the skilled trades. While Car Painting was the path that first captured her interest, she has discovered that the skills she developed can open doors to many different roles and career directions.
“My sector is broad and there are many opportunities available,” she explains. “Car Painting for me was interesting because, at the time, I was the only woman. And I won’t be the last.”
Today, Cecile encourages others to look beyond one specific job title when considering a career in the trades. Opportunities can include sales, management, training and mentoring. For her, one of the most rewarding parts of her career has been the opportunity to support young people entering the trades. She encourages high school students to explore their interests, develop their skills and take advantage of every opportunity to learn.
“I would tell high school students to try and take everything in while in high school and then find something you love in the skilled trades and work on your skills,” she says. “Employers are looking for skilled workers.”
Through Skills/Compétences Canada, Cecile has also found opportunities to give back. Inspired by her own experiences, she became the mentor she never had for a young female student training in Car Painting. That student has competed at the Skills Canada National Competition and she is so proud! Cecile’s journey is a powerful reminder that a career in the skilled trades can lead to meaningful work, lifelong learning and the opportunity to inspire the next generation.
