This story captures the true spirit of the Skills movement. For Danny Sabourin, what began as a passion for Automobile Technology has grown into a lifelong journey of learning, achievement, and giving back. Today, Danny is not only a skilled professional but also a Trainer in Outdoor Power and Recreation Equipment, guiding the next generation and proving that with dedication and heart, a passion can become a legacy.
From Carpentry to a Career Pivot
Danny’s journey started in Ontario, when he entered his first regional Skills competition in Carpentry back in 2014. He placed first and went on to compete at the provincial level, finishing seventh out of 50 as one of the youngest competitors there. Although his competition path in Carpentry ended early due to a co-op placement, it opened the door to new experiences. Danny traveled to Tokyo, where he worked on a Carpentry project building a church in Yokohama —a once-in-a-lifetime experience that shaped his outlook on skilled trades. But when he returned home, Danny was ready for a change. He enrolled at Centennial College and graduated in 2020. Looking back, his advice for youth is simple but powerful:
“Get into a small private shop where you’re going to learn. That hands-on experience will put you miles ahead.”
A Northern Adventure
Danny’s career took an unexpected turn when he moved to Iqaluit, Nunavut. He discovered a community where resources were limited, but determination was limitless. In Iqaluit, Danny became involved with Skills competitions again—this time as a Trainer in Outdoor Power and Recreation Equipment. He attended the Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC) 2025, in Regina, where he witnessed first-hand the incredible talent on display.
“At SCNC, you’re watching the best of the best,” Danny explained. “Each competitor has already fought hard to earn their spot, representing their province or territory. It’s truly inspiring to see.”
Competing Against the Odds
It’s a well-known fact that fewer companies have headquarters in the North and that getting equipment there can be costly, but that hasn’t stopped Danny’s students. Their determination and creativity continue to shine through, proving that passion and skill matter more than circumstance.
“What amazes me is that my students aren’t phased by the national stage. They’ve grown up facing adversity, and that resilience shows when they compete. Even without fancy tools or big training spaces, they’re still up there on the podium, proving they belong.”
Pride in Seeing his Students Shine
Danny says the highlight of his journey has been seeing his students succeed at SCNC. Watching them rise to the challenge despite every obstacle left him beaming with pride. Their success is a powerful reminder: skill, passion, and determination matter far more than the size of your shop or the tools at your disposal.
