I chose cabinetmaking because of my high school teacher who showed me how woodworking brings out my inner creativity. I would love to build custom spiral stair cases and custom resin tables. It would be quite an experience to start up a business and be my own boss one day.
During my first year of high school, my teacher asked me if I was interested in competing in a skills competition. I said yes and competed for the first time in 2017. It was such an amazing experience that I had to do it again in 2018!
My father’s uncle is a cabinetmaker and a carpenter, and he went to SAIT as well. It means a lot to me that I get to follow in his footsteps. He’s been there for me when I’m in need of a shop to build some cool projects.
Continuous learning is probably the most Essential Skill for me while training for competitions. The reason being is there is always something new to learn and there are different ways of building something. During the competition thinking is important because while competing you have to think many steps ahead to be successful. You are always building one thing and thinking about everything else, all at the same time.
