Grant Maddock
Biography
I’ve always enjoyed making things. Studying Mechatronics means that I’m turning my hobby into a career. It’s so satisfying to understand how a machine works and the potential of what can be done with it. My career goal is to find a job where I can be active and stay busy all day.
When I started my program at Humber, I was shown a project from the WorldSkills Competition 2017. It inspired me to develop my skills to a world-class level. I’ve been training for three years, and it’s paid off. I will be representing Canada at the WorldSkills Competition 2026, in Shanghai, China! I believe the biggest challenge will be competing against Team China. They’re always at the top of the podium in Mechatronics, and this time we’re on their turf.
Interesting fact
One of my favorite things to do is go out on the water with nothing but me, my canoe and my paddle to explore.
Skills for Success
Problem Solving is definitely the top skill to help me succeed. There are hundreds of components in a Mechatronics task and any of them can be damaged or installed incorrectly. I also need to write a complex program that controls the system. Many things can go wrong, so it’s critical to diagnose and fix the issues as quickly as possible.
