My Skills Journey
I won the silver medal at the Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC) 2024, in Quebec City, in my Skill Area of Job Skill Demonstration, presenting painting and drywalling. The Skills competition has allowed me to explore many different career options and a variety of trades. I’ve built my trade-related skill set and gained credibility within my trade, while also testing relevant soft skills. And I’ve met the most amazing people along the way!

Joining the National Alumni Committee (NAC)
Skills/Compétences Canada introduced me to the skilled trades and allowed me to find a great community within them. So, I want to give back and help others find their own place within the trades! A safe, inclusive learning environment, a strong sense of community and working to destigmatize skilled trades are just a few of the reasons I’m so excited to join the NAC.

Overcoming Career Barriers
Changing trades was one of the most difficult things I’ve had to do. I originally worked as an interior painter/decorator but eventually realized it wasn’t for me. As l looked for a new career, I relied on the Skills for Success and my accumulated knowledge about the many other trades that are out there. I’m now loving my new job in landscape and horticulture!

Proudest Moment
Like most people who have participated at Skills competitions, my proudest moment would have to be when I’ve competed at competitions and witnessed my personal growth and success.
