Sierrah Bennett
My Skills Journey
I competed in Video Production in Skills competitions from 2019 to 2021, winning the gold medal at the Skills Canada Virtual National Competition 2021. I then launched my business, Sierrah Bennett Media, while attending school to become a teacher. Today, I teach full time in the School of Global Media Studies and Photography, where I’m privileged to share my passion with my students. I owe my career to Skills/Compétences Canada!
Joining the National Alumni Committee (NAC)
I joined the NAC because it keeps me involved with my Skills family and enables me to help youth find their craft! I’m really looking forward to bonding with other alumni and learning what their lives are like in other provinces. I’m also very excited to help at the Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC) with the NAC members!
Overcoming Career Barriers
When I was a Skills competitor, an individual in my community said, “Two women will never win in Video Production at a provincial level.” However, my Skills partner and best friend, Mackenzie De Crescenzo, and I won gold at SCNC. As women, we’re constantly underestimated. We not only have to be good, but exceptional at what we do in order to gain respect. That said, I’m very optimistic of the growing acceptance of women working in trades.
Proudest Moment
The proudest moment of my career occurred quite recently! In September, I became a full-time teacher and seeing my students fall in love with media studies and get creative makes my heart so happy! My favourite comment I hear is, “Miss Bennett, your class is my favourite.”
