Interview with Rob Cathcart, Father of Dusty Cathcart, WorldSkills Team Canada 2022 Competitor in Industrial Mechanics

What’s it like to have a child that made it to the WorldSkills Competition?

It’s absolutely amazing to have someone that has challenged himself to be able to get to this level. He’s always tried to perfect everything he has done so it’s pretty awesome to see that he has come this far.

Have you always encouraged Dusty to pursue a skilled trade?

Yes, I’m a Red Seal Millwright and since Dusty was young he has been helping me wrench. This helped him discover that he loves building and repairing things. We’ve always encouraged him to find something that he loves to do as a career and to do things to the best of his ability. It is a good trait to have.

What has competing in skills competitions brought to Dusty?

It has given him confidence in his abilities and allowed him to build new friendships and connections throughout Canada, and now the world. I believe that it has also made him a better tradesperson.
